dust proof computer case | display enclosure

Lately we’ve had a number of conversations with sawmills following safety audits. In certain locations within their production areas, the auditor named some of the LED displays as “moderate risk” when it came to the accumulation of dust. This resulted in a requirement for the facility to house the display in to a NEMA12 enclosure.

While these particular auditors pointed out specific areas only, it’s only a matter of time before more and more electronics will require some sort of dust control. Much of this is being accomplished by changes that many mills have made, by adjusting the frequency and levels of dust cleanup throughout production areas. While this is a great first step, it does not address the dust accumulation that is occurring within the electronics themselves; PCs and peripherals, LCDs, printers, and equipment mounted in non-dustproof racks.
The DustShield line is manufactured to NEMA12 standards, so it was a perfect solution to meet the auditor’s requirement for the production area display. But beyond the health and safety compliance there’s another important factor….
Computer and electronics equipment breathes.
And as cooling fans deliver life-saving air over hot electronic components, along with that air comes dust. That dust, over time, grinds away at moving parts, scratches screens and lenses, and in some cases can even cause fires.

Why wait for a health and safety ruling, or an incident to occur from dust accumulation? Along with your dust accumulation cleaning program, look at the next step of control by using dust proof enclosures.

Now I know what some of you may be thinking: to put electronics in enclosures is going to be costly. While this is a fair point, there are a few things to keep in mind:

*By taking your site’s dust control program to this level, you’ll further reduce the chance of having a site incident.

*Once electronics are protected by an enclosure, the internal components within will last longer because they’re no longer being flooded by dust. Over time this will save you money by reducing down-time, as equipment will last longer. There will also be cost savings due to less frequent equipment replacement.

Consider this scenario:

Sawmill environment, unprotected equipment:
-4x large LED monitors at a cost of $2000/ea
-6x desktop PCs at a cost of $2000/ea
-1x industrial label printer at a cost of $5000
Total equipment cost: $25,000

Estimated typical life span of all equipment= 8 years
Assume a 50% lifespan reduction from dust in the environment
Equipment cost over 8 years= $50,000

Sawmill environment, equipment protected from dust:
-4x large LED monitors at a cost of $2000/ea
-6x desktop PCs at a cost of $2000/ea
-1x industrial label printer at a cost of $5000
Dust enclosures for equipment listed= $10,000
Total equipment cost: $35,000

Estimated typical life span of all equipment= 8 years

Equipment cost over 8 years= $35,000

TOTAL SAVED - $15,000

*NOTE: This estimate does not include the value of reducing potential site incidents from dust accumulation.
